Carlos Guadamuz was gunned down on 10 February 2004 outside the studios of the TV station Canal 23 de Noticias de Nicaragua (CDNN). The gunman, who shot him several times, was arrested and identified as William Hurtado, a former policeman during the 1979-1990 government of the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN).
Hurtado admitted at his trial that he killed Guadamuz, a former FSLN member, because of his scathing criticism of the FSLN. Hurtado was sentenced to 18 years in prison, while his alleged accomplices were acquitted. Guadamuz produced and presented a programme on CDNN that was called "Dardos al Centro" and was considered very controversial.
