Tamil-language TV presenter Relangi Sevaraja of the state-owned Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation (SLRC) and her husband, Sinnadurai Selvaraja, were gunned down in a Colombo travel agency on 12 August 2005. The gunmen got away.
Aged 45, Relangi Sevaraja had worked for the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC) from 1987 to 2000. In her SLRC programme, “Uthaya Darisanam,” she was often critical of the LTTE (Tamil Tigers).
According to several local sources, she and her husband were members of PLOTE, a Tamil political party that is a rival to the Tamil Tigers. Some news media blamed the Tamil Tigers for their murders.
