Representative Chris Smith (R-NJ) introduced GOFA to help prevent American IT companies from being forced to collaborate with the Web censors in Internet-restricting countries. Reporters Without Borders has been providing Rep. Smith’s staff information on the obstacles to the free flow of information online and the behavior of some US companies.

The bill was passed by the House Foreign Affairs Committee in October 2007 and is now awaiting a floor vote.
