Supporting Roberto Saviano

Reporters Without Borders voices its full support for Italian writer Roberto Saviano, who has had to live under police protection for the past two years and who announced yesterday that he now intends to go into exile in order to elude the Neopolitan Camorra’s hit-men.

It would be incomprehensible if our organisation, while defending the right to report and receive news and information worldwide, did not at the same time manifest its total solidarity with this courageous and resolute writer.

To the gangland bosses, big and small, who boast of being powerful men, Saviano responds by holding up a mirror. To greed and cruelty, he responds with dignity and courage.

Saviano personifies not only Italian honour but also the verve and spirit of all those who refuse to submit to totalitarianism. It is the quality of great men who choose to gather reality’s scattered shards, piece them together and present them to their contemporaries. Either as journalists or, in his case, as writers.

Saviano and all those like him who find their lives turned upside down by organised crime’s thugs in Italy or elsewhere should know that Reporters Without Borders supports them and admires them.
