Shabistan-e-wajood (The Story of a Journalist) is Sahil Maqbool’s latest book, written while he was behind bars.
It recounts the experiences of the Kashmiri journalist who was detained for a total of three and a half years, the wretchedness he endured and the conditions suffered by prisoners. He has written eight previous books, autobiography, poetry, fiction and a novel.
Sahil Maqbool was jailed under the emergency security law on 18 September 2004, accused of having secret documents and spying for Pakistan by passing on photos of events in Kashmir in recent years. He was released in January 2009.
Reporters without borders frequently drew attention to the unfair detention of the journalist, who was held without trial.
On his release, he wrote to the organisation saying, "I want to thank RSF for the support and assistance during my detention. RSF raised its voice in my support and now I am a free man!"
