Journalist reported kidnapped and threatened with death

Reporters Without Borders said today it was concerned about the apparent kidnapping of journalist Ahmet Un and death threats he had received.

"The Turkish authorities must do everything they can to clarify this incident, if it proves to be true, punish those responsible for the crime and guarantee the security of the journalist," said Reporters Without Borders secretary-general Robert Ménard.

Un, who works for the weekly Firatta Yasam, in Diyarbakir, is reported to have been kidnapped on 4 September by armed men who said they were police and intelligence agents. He is thought to have been taken to a deserted spot outside the town, interrogated about his work and threatened with death to force him to sign a promise to supply his kidnappers with information.

Obstacles to the free flow of information are very serious in Turkey.
