Hector Ramírez of Radio Sonora died of a heart attack as he was being chased by supporters of the ruling Guatemala Republican Front (FRG) through the streets of Guatemala City during a demonstration on 24 July. Aged 61, he also worked for the news programme "Notisiete" on the Canal 7 television station.
The demonstrators, who had been brought in buses to the city centre city at the start of the day, were protesting a supreme court decision banning the FRG’s leader, Gen. Efraín Ríos Montt, from being a candidate for president in elections to be held on 9 November. For several hours, they blocked access to various public institutions and a private office block, trapping several hundred persons inside. Ríos Montt, who is currently the congressional president, denied that the FRG was behind the protest.
