The photos you’re not supposed to see

361 photos of coffins of US soldiers killed in Iraq have been posted on the website www.thememoryhole.org.

They were put there by activist Russ Kick, who obtained them by making an official request to the Pentagon under the Freedom of Information Act.

They were taken by the US Air Force at Dover air base in East Delaware, to which the majority of bodies are repatriated. Since the first Gulf war, the Pentagon has banned all media coverage of the return of the remains of American soldiers.

"The main objective of this policy is to respect the wishes and privacy of families who have suffered terrible loss," said Pentagon spokesman James Turner. Protest at the ban is increasing within the United States.
