Action on human rights before 2008 Beijing Olympics

I would like to draw your attention to the fate of the approximately 100 journalists, cyber-dissidents and press freedom activists who are imprisoned in your country. I think it is vital that they should be released prior to the holding of the Olympic Games in the summer of 2008.

Despite the undertakings given in 2001 by the Organising Committee you head, the Chinese government has done nothing to improve the press freedom situation.

The Olympic Charter says sport must promote "a peaceful society concerned with the preservation of human dignity," but the human rights situation is far from satisfactory in China.

I urge you to use your influence to obtain a mass release of prisoners of conscience and an end to censorship of the news media and Internet.
